Professor Haun Saussy is a leading scholar of Chinese and comparative literature, has been named University Professor of Comparative Literature in the Division of the Humanities and the College at the University of Chicago. One of the few figures with a deep understanding of both the Western classical and Eastern tradition, who has advanced arguments for a new global approach to comparative literature. Professor Saussy is the 17th person ever to hold the title of University Professor at University of Chicago, an honor given to distinguished scholars.

Saussy’s first book, The Problem of a Chinese Aesthetic (Stanford University Press, 1993), discussed the tradition of commentary that has grown up around the early Chinese poetry collection Shijing. His most recent book is Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China (Harvard University Asia Center, 2001), an account of the ways of knowing and describing specific to China scholarship.

하버드대학에서 한국어 수업을 들을 때 이야기다. 첫날 30명이 왔다. 이 중 22명이 한국계 미국인이고 한국계가 아닌 학생은 8명이었다. 그런데 2주일도 지나지 않아 한국계 아닌 수강생은 나 혼자만 남게 됐다. 강사들은 대부분 한국계 대학원생들이었다.

There was one other Chinese at Yale who had immense impact on me and led me to strive for excellence in the field of Chinese, Professor Kang-i Sun Chang (孙康宜教授). An extremely enthusiastic teacher and scholar trained in Taiwan, she had an all encompassing view of the potential of Chinese literature to be meaningful to everyone. She was also the one who encouraged me to learn Japanese and to study in Japan for my graduate work. Her father had studied in Japan in a previous era and she felt that I should take an equally broad perspective. An extremely well-read scholar, who wished to talk with anyone willing to engage her in a serious conversation, Professor Zhang constantly shared with me poems and stories when we sat at the desk in her office.

Korea Society of East Asian Comparative Literature awards prize to Emanuel (Korean)

I had the great honor of receiving the Seokheon Scholarly Prize offered by the Korea Society of East Asian Comparative Literature. The prize was awarded in recognition of my recent study of Chinese novels in Japan: The Observable Mundane: Vernacular Chinese and the Emergence of a Literary Discourse on Popular Narrative in Edo Japan (Seoul National University Press, 2011). The Seokheon Scholarly Prize is awarded for the best study of comparative Asian literature published in Korea. The prize was established four years ago in honor of Professor Jung Kyubok (정규복 교수) of Korea University’s Department of Korean Literature. When I returned from my year in Taiwan, there was a new professor of Chinese literature at Yale whom I had never met. He was a tall man with very short blond hair and a shy personality. Opening address at event dedicated to the poet Son Hoyeon (November 24, 2011)

Emanuel was invited to deliver the opening remarks and also to read the poems of the Korean poet Son Hoyeon 손호연  at a special commemorative event (eighth anniversary of her death) held at the home of Son Hoyeon in Seoul.
