Mr. Murthy is a legendary Indian business known for building Infosys Technologies from a local company to a global leader in consulting and technology services. This Interview concerns the position of SMEs (small and medium-size enterprise) in Korea and in the world.
I gave a talk at KBS’s education center in Suwon on the topic of the Korean Wave and the future of KBS on July 24, 2012. The talk was intended for new employees of KBS and there were perhaps 150 young people, fresh out of college, who represent the future of Korean media.
The talk stressed the importance of Korean youth to take advantage of their remarkable cultural influence in the world to create a better future for us all. I gave examples of the impact that Korea can have in either a positive or negative manner, and drew attention to the great depth of the Korean cultural tradition, far beyond current K Pop, to inspire people around Asia and around the world to reach for something greater than consumerism and self-gratification.
The talk encouraged the next generation at KBS to imagine a unique global KBS that reaches beyond its limits, a medium that can go beyond CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera.
The response of the young KBS employees was quite enthusiastic and one even came up to me to tell me about her plans to learn more about China.

昨今、アジアは貿易、技術、財政面において著しい速度で統合されている。アジアが知的、技術的、財政的な面において世界のハブとなるといえども、物流、エネルギー、財政的な面でアジア統合及び文化的、知的連携の遅れが発生している。このような変化に対してアジア人の間で真の討論が十分になされていないのが現実である。国境を越えて全ての利害当事者が参加した上で、アジアの流れについて分析し、討論を交すことが切実に必要な状況である。アジアインスティチュートは技術が我々社会に及ぼす影響、環境、青少年及び女性の問題、教育、コミュニケーション、そして個人事業が国際関係にもたらす影響について集中することに決定した。これら全ての問題点がアジアの未来のためには重要であり、慎重な分析と討論が行われるに値すると見込まれる。アジアインスティチュートは企業、政府機関、学界において貢献度の高いリーダーへの信頼を基に問題点について討論し、解決策を講究するために知識及び資源をとりまとめる中立の場を提供する一方で、アジアのあらゆる事柄について関与していく。
アジアインスティチュートは中国、日本、韓国、南アジア、中東、中央アジア、東南アジア、その他の国家間における協力及び論議が円滑に行われるための新たな機会を模索しつつ、アジア全体をまとめ有意義な協力関係が保たれるよう貢献する。アジアインスティチュートは生態学的に持続可能な統合及び安定したアジアの新たなビジョンを示していくが、収益事業として利用されることはない。

저는 오랫동안 일본문학과 한국문학을 연구해 왔어요. 한국과 일본의 문화와 역사를 어느 정도 알고 있고 양쪽에 매우 친한 친구도 많습니다.
이승신 관장님의 시집을 읽어보니까 제1장에 “꿈이 있다면”이라는 시가 있었어요. 그 말을 보고마틴 루터 킹 목사의 “나에게 꿈이 있습니다.” 라는 연설이 생각 났습니다. 이승신 관장님의 시와 킹 목사의 연설에 영감을 받고 말씀을 드립니다.
“나에게는 꿈이 있습니다.”
나에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 한국인과 일본인이 힘을 합쳐서 인류를 위협 하는 최악의 敵을 退治 하는 꿈이 있어요. 그 敵은 이웃나라가 아니고 저희 미래를 위협 하는 환경위기 즉, 기후변화 입니다.

This conference, part of a series of events commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the normalization of relations between China and Korea, brought together important figures from the arts of Korea and China for a thoughtful discussion of he future of cultural cooperation between the two countries.
この間日韓緊張の最中で自分の日本と韓国の関係に関する夢を述べました。「私には夢があります」という表現は 黒人人権運動の盛りにマーティン・ルーサー・キング牧師がした「私には夢がある」演説からとりました。

李承信さんの詩集『君の心で花は咲く』には、たいへん大きな文化的・歴史的な意味があります。まず李承信さんは、お母さんの孫戸妍の和歌の伝統を勇気をもって受け継いでおられます。すばらしいことだと思います。李承信さんは、日本語、韓国語の両方であらゆることを文学的に表現しておられます。私の場合は、日本の文学を長く勉強してきたものとして、日本古典文学をアメリカの大学で教えながら、まわりの人々に日本文学のよさを長い間説明してきました。韓国に対しても日本に対しても深い愛情をもっております。同時に、厳しい歴史の矛盾をも見つめてきました。民族の悲しい歴史に対する韓国人の心理もわかります。
今日はアメリカ人として正直にお話いたします。まず日韓関係を考えるとかやはりイエスの言葉が思い浮かびます。

Asia Institute Seminar
“The Great Green Wall and the Fight against Desertification in China”
The Asia Institute seminar on the noble fight against desertification was a wake-call for all of us. I must admit that although I was pleased by the enthusiasm of the participants, I was shocked that we did not have a larger crowd. After all, the spread of deserts in China is perhaps the most serious challenge facing East Asia today and is a crisis that calls for a global solution.
Yet attendance was less than for our seminar on nuclear power in North Korea—an important topic, but not anywhere as significant.
