There is a terrible danger lurking just over the DMZ that threatens the Republic of Korea and Northeast Asia. That threat demands an immediate response that is focused and forceful, as well as a long-term strategy that will bring together all members of the international community for a campaign dedicated to the permanent containment of this threat.

It is not North Korea’s Taepodong ICBM systems, nor its Musudan or Nodong missiles that I have in mind. Nor do I refer to the nuclear weapons that recently were tested as part of Pyongyang’s high-stakes diplomatic cat-and-mouse game with the international community. Although the danger of an arms race in Northeast Asia is serious, humanity faces another, potentially more devastating peril—one for which we have yet to begin to make required strategic preparations.

I refer to the spread of deserts and semi-desert regions in North Korea as a result of the reckless logging of forests, the misuse of soil, and irresponsible farming practices. These ecological dead zones, where few plants can survive, are spreading. As desertification worsens, this ecological nightmare will have serious, perhaps irreversible, repercussions in South Korea and throughout the region.

Professor Kim Seoung-il of Seoul National University estimates that over 1 million hectares of forests in North Korea have been lost over the last 20 years, leading to a nearly irreversible loss of soil and an endless series of floods and droughts.

The program, entitled “Korea, China & Japan: The History that Unlocks the Future,” includes discussions with experts from across Asia and several compelling interviews with individuals committed to this vision. In light of the unprecedented environmental threat posed by the radiation leaking from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, it is urgent that the world come together as one to propose a long-term global solution that includes both experts and concerned citizens from around the world. That solution must stress international cooperation to develop new technologies and approaches to produce a permanent solution to this disaster over the next 30 years. But we also need to consider include social, cultural and institutional innovations that will make such massive collaboration possible.

“환경파괴, 빈부격차, 전통단절 등 아시아 문제에 집중“

임마누엘 페스트라이쉬(Emanuel Pastreich·49) 소장은 고등학교 시절부터 아시아에 끌렸다. 그래서 간 곳이 예일대 중문과였다. 대만국립대 교환학생으로 1년간 대만에 머물기도 했다. 학부 졸업 후 1991년 그의 발걸음이 닿은 곳은 일본. 동경대에서 비교문화학으로 석사를 취득했다. 박사학위는 하버드 대학원에서 ‘한일 중국통속소설 수용 과정 비교연구’로 받았다. 그리고 도착한 곳이 한국이다.

페스타라이쉬 소장은 “학부시절부터 동북아를 중심으로 아시아가 세계의 중심이 될 거란 막연한 느낌이 있었다”면서 “오늘날 한류란 흐름 속엔 전 세계 사람들의 한국 탐험에 대한 욕구가 들어있다. 내가 중국과 일본 문화에 대한 탐구를 거쳐 최종적으로 한국에 닿을 내린 것도 바로 그 때문”이라고 밝혔다. 실제 그는 한국인과 결혼해 장인으로부터 ‘이만열’이란 이름까지 받았다. 영어 못지않게 한국어도 유창하다.

-아시아인스티튜트 설립 배경은.
“주미 한국대사관 홍보원(KORUS House) 이사로 있으면서 ‘다이나믹 코리아’을 발간했다. 당시 ‘동아시아 정치 및 사업’에 관한 강연시리즈를 기획했는데 지금도 홍보원의 주요사업으로 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 이런 일들을 하면서 연구소를 설립하고 싶은 꿈이 생겼다. 이후 충남 도지사 국제관계 보좌관으로 근무하며 우송대에서 교수를 할 때 아시아인스티튜트를 설립했다. 2007년 6월 일이다”

-연구소 비전이라면.
“아시아는 빠르게 경제와 지적인 면에서 세계의 중심이 되고 있다. 그러나 군비증강, 성장을 위한 잘못된 계획, 생태학적 저하, 환경부담, 기술의 무분별한 사용, 소비지상주의에서 오는 전통문화의 쇠퇴가 아시아의 거대한 잠재력을 누그러뜨리고 있다. 아시아인스티튜트는 이러한 아시아 문제에 집중해 시대를 고무시킬 수 있는 더 큰 아시아의 비전을 보여주고자 한다.”

-개인적 관심사는 무엇인가.
“한-중-일-미간 공동 연구 추진이다. 워싱턴 주미대사관에서 정무 및 공보 공사 자문관을 했고 이런 경력을 바탕으로 한국 대사관에서

Professor Michael Puett of Harvard University visits Korea under auspices of the Asia Institute and Kyung Hee Cyber University

Michael Puett speaks with students about China at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.

The Asia Institute, in cooperation with our partner Kyung Hee Cyber University, hosted Professor Michael Puett of Harvard University for a one week stay in Seoul (July 16-22, 2013).

Professor Puett is an expert widely recognized for his work on the political thought of ancient China who has begun writing widely about the potentiality for the future of China to be found in its own varied and complex cultural past.

Kyung Hee Cyber University and the Asia Institute hosted three talks with Professor Puett in which he spoke to an audience of students (middle school, high school and college—as well as some adults) about critical issues for youth. The first lecture concerned the meaning of education and study with a focus on what Harvard University education offers as a model.

The second lecture concerned the larger cultural and geopolitical significance of the rise of China for Korea and the world with an emphasis on a long-term, balanced perspective.

The third lecture, which also featured Professor John Treat of Yale University and Director Emanuel Pastreich of the Asia Institute, concerned a broad consideration of strategies and approaches to study aimed at today’s youth.
