style=\"color:#008000;\">Pastreich\u00a0recently\u00a0announced\u00a0that\u00a0he\u00a0intends\u00a0to\u00a0leave\u00a0Kyung\u00a0Hee\u00a0University\u00a0to\u00a0launch\u00a0University\u00a0Of\u00a0Brain\u00a0Education\u00a0(UBE)\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0brand-new\u00a0think\u00a0tank\u00a0entitled \u201cThe\u00a0Earth\u00a0Management\u00a0 Institute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>Why\u00a0would\u00a0you\u00a0leave\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0the\u00a0director\u00a0of\u00a0this\u00a0brand-new\u00a0Earth\u00a0Management\u00a0Institute?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Emanuel\u00a0Pastreich<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>Being\u00a0a\u00a0professor,\u00a0or\u00a0being\u00a0affiliated\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0famous\u00a0university,\u00a0should\u00a0not\u00a0be\u00a0the\u00a0goal\u00a0for\u00a0an\u00a0intellectual.\u00a0An\u00a0affiliation\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0major\u00a0institution\u00a0can\u00a0help\u00a0one\u00a0to\u00a0realize\u00a0one\u2019s\u00a0goals,\u00a0but\u00a0being\u00a0at\u00a0a\u00a0major\u00a0institution\u00a0is\u00a0only\u00a0a\u00a0means.<\/h4>\n<h4>I\u00a0have\u00a0had\u00a0the\u00a0good\u00a0fortune\u00a0to\u00a0receive\u00a0an\u00a0excellent\u00a0education\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0learn\u00a0multiple\u00a0foreign\u00a0languages.\u00a0That\u00a0education\u00a0and\u00a0those\u00a0skills\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0my\u00a0possessions,\u00a0they\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0a\u00a0special\u00a0right\u00a0that\u00a0I\u00a0possess\u00a0for\u00a0which\u00a0I\u00a0must\u00a0be\u00a0rewarded\u00a0with\u00a0an\u00a0exalted\u00a0position\u00a0at\u00a0a\u00a0famous\u00a0university.<\/h4>\n<h4>I\u00a0was\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0focus\u00a0on\u00a0my\u00a0studies\u00a0for\u00a0these\u00a0years\u00a0because\u00a0so\u00a0many\u00a0people\u00a0helped\u00a0me,\u00a0whether\u00a0I\u00a0knew\u00a0it\u00a0or\u00a0not.\u00a0I\u00a0am\u00a0talking\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0men\u00a0who\u00a0cleaned\u00a0my\u00a0elementary\u00a0school,\u00a0the\u00a0women\u00a0who\u00a0cooked\u00a0my\u00a0meals\u00a0in\u00a0college\u00a0(and\u00a0today),\u00a0the\u00a0many\u00a0efforts\u00a0of\u00a0drivers,\u00a0librarians,\u00a0secretaries,\u00a0to\u00a0maintain\u00a0an\u00a0environment\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0work.\u00a0I\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0tremendous\u00a0responsibility\u00a0to\u00a0all\u00a0of\u00a0them,\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0even\u00a0more\u00a0people,\u00a0to\u00a0return\u00a0that\u00a0debt\u00a0to\u00a0society.<\/h4>\n<h4>I\u00a0have\u00a0a\u00a0duty\u00a0to\u00a0share\u00a0what\u00a0I\u00a0have\u00a0received\u00a0with\u00a0as\u00a0many\u00a0people\u00a0as\u00a0possible,\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0that\u00a0as\u00a0we\u00a0struggle\u00a0to\u00a0respond\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0rapidly\u00a0changing\u00a0and\u00a0dangerous\u00a0world.<\/h4>\n<h4>Let\u00a0us\u00a0first\u00a0face\u00a0the\u00a0truth:\u00a0the\u00a0institutional\u00a0decay\u00a0of\u00a0educational\u00a0institutions\u00a0in\u00a0Korea,\u00a0and\u00a0around\u00a0the\u00a0world,\u00a0is\u00a0making\u00a0the\u00a0goal\u00a0of\u00a0responding\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0needs\u00a0of\u00a0young\u00a0people,\u00a0and\u00a0of\u00a0our\u00a0precious\u00a0Earth,\u00a0more\u00a0and\u00a0more\u00a0difficult.<\/h4>\n<h4>In\u00a0a\u00a0normal\u00a0age,\u00a0I\u00a0might\u00a0have\u00a0spent\u00a0my\u00a0life\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0committed\u00a0teacher\u00a0helping\u00a0his\u00a0students\u00a0to\u00a0understand\u00a0the\u00a0world.\u00a0But\u00a0I\u00a0believe\u00a0that\u00a0there\u00a0are\u00a0extraordinary\u00a0moments\u00a0in\u00a0history,\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0come\u00a0every\u00a0few\u00a0hundred\u00a0years,\u00a0which\u00a0offer\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0risks\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0some\u00a0substantial\u00a0opportunities.<\/h4>\n<h4>This\u00a0is\u00a0such\u00a0a\u00a0moment\u00a0and\u00a0action\u00a0is\u00a0demanded\u00a0of\u00a0me.\u00a0I\u00a0cannot\u00a0simply\u00a0teach\u00a0my\u00a0classes\u00a0and\u00a0publish\u00a0the\u00a0academic\u00a0papers.<\/h4>\n<h4>The\u00a0rapid\u00a0evolution\u00a0of\u00a0technology\u00a0has\u00a0overwhelmed\u00a0our\u00a0society\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0institutions\u00a0of\u00a0local,\u00a0national\u00a0and\u00a0global\u00a0governance.\u00a0Artistic\u00a0and\u00a0literary\u00a0expression,\u00a0which\u00a0should\u00a0provide\u00a0inspiration\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0better\u00a0society\u00a0to\u00a0all\u00a0citizens,\u00a0has\u00a0degenerated\u00a0into\u00a0an\u00a0ode\u00a0to\u00a0consumption\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0immediate\u00a0satisfaction.<\/h4>\n<h4>We\u00a0know\u00a0many\u00a0facts\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0many\u00a0skills\u00a0but\u00a0we\u00a0are\u00a0completely\u00a0paralyzed\u00a0and\u00a0incapable\u00a0coming\u00a0together\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0community\u00a0and\u00a0taking\u00a0action.<\/h4>\n<h4>This\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0very\u00a0dangerous\u00a0time.\u00a0We\u00a0must\u00a0alter\u00a0our\u00a0priorities\u00a0and\u00a0change\u00a0our\u00a0habits.<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>What\u00a0have\u00a0you\u00a0seen\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0university\u00a0that\u00a0has\u00a0changed\u00a0your\u00a0thinking?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Emanuel\u00a0Pastreich<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>I\u00a0am\u00a0profoundly\u00a0aware\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0crisis\u00a0in\u00a0education\u00a0from\u00a0my\u00a0teaching\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Kyung\u00a0Hee\u00a0University,\u00a0and\u00a0elsewhere.\u00a0Our\u00a0students\u00a0are\u00a0forced\u00a0to\u00a0study\u00a0topics\u00a0that\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0interest\u00a0them\u00a0in\u00a0order\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0jobs\u00a0that\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0inspire\u00a0them,\u00a0jobs\u00a0that\u00a0have\u00a0little\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0with\u00a0creating\u00a0a\u00a0better\u00a0society\u00a0or\u00a0with\u00a0helping\u00a0their\u00a0neighbors.<\/h4>\n<h4>Sadly,\u00a0education\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0reduced\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0diploma,\u00a0a\u00a0document\u00a0that\u00a0allows\u00a0you\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0a\u00a0job.\u00a0If\u00a0students\u00a0could\u00a0secretly\u00a0buy\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0these\u00a0documents\u00a0and\u00a0get\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0job,\u00a0I\u00a0think\u00a0many\u00a0would\u00a0be\u00a0tempted\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0so\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0classes\u00a0themselves,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0wisdom\u00a0and\u00a0knowledge\u00a0contained\u00a0in\u00a0them,\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0important\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0society\u00a0anymore.<\/h4>\n<h4>Education\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0about\u00a0understanding\u00a0the\u00a0world,\u00a0or\u00a0about\u00a0considering\u00a0one\u2019s\u00a0ethical\u00a0role\u00a0in\u00a0it. It\u00a0has\u00a0become\u00a0increasingly\u00a0difficult\u00a0for\u00a0me\u00a0to\u00a0teach\u00a0in\u00a0such\u00a0an\u00a0environment.<\/h4>\n<h4>The\u00a0university\u00a0in\u00a0specific,\u00a0and\u00a0education\u00a0in\u00a0general,\u00a0has\u00a0become\u00a0a\u00a0place\u00a0for\u00a0competition,\u00a0and\u00a0not\u00a0for\u00a0cooperation.\u00a0Students\u00a0who\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0making\u00a0life-long\u00a0friendships\u00a0with\u00a0professors,<\/h4>\n<h4>and\u00a0with\u00a0each\u00a0other,\u00a0are\u00a0increasingly\u00a0alienated\u00a0from\u00a0each\u00a0other\u00a0and\u00a0are\u00a0drawn\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0deceptive\u00a0world\u00a0presented\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0smart\u00a0phones.<\/h4>\n<h4>And\u00a0the\u00a0professors\u00a0also\u00a0are\u00a0forced\u00a0to\u00a0compete\u00a0with\u00a0each\u00a0other,\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0forming\u00a0an\u00a0intellectual\u00a0community.\u00a0The\u00a0only\u00a0thing\u00a0that\u00a0matters\u00a0is\u00a0that\u00a0professors\u00a0publish\u00a0articles\u00a0in\u00a0SSCI\u00a0journals.\u00a0But\u00a0what\u00a0are\u00a0SSCI\u00a0(Social\u00a0Science\u00a0Citation\u00a0Index)\u00a0Journals?\u00a0They\u00a0dull\u00a0magazines,\u00a0chock\u00a0full\u00a0of\u00a0jargon,\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0edited\u00a0by\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0scholars.\u00a0These\u00a0journal\u00a0articles,\u00a0the\u00a0only\u00a0important\u00a0contribution\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0professor,\u00a0have\u00a0literally\u00a0no\u00a0impact\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0society.<\/h4>\n<h4>I\u00a0feel\u00a0I\u00a0have\u00a0an\u00a0ethical\u00a0obligation\u00a0to\u00a0talk\u00a0to\u00a0ordinary\u00a0citizens,\u00a0to\u00a0truly\u00a0engage\u00a0my\u00a0students,\u00a0and\u00a0all\u00a0young\u00a0people,\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0serious\u00a0debate\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0risks\u00a0of\u00a0our\u00a0age:\u00a0climate\u00a0change,\u00a0the\u00a0disparity\u00a0of\u00a0wealth,\u00a0the\u00a0threat\u00a0of\u00a0nuclear\u00a0war,\u00a0the\u00a0decay\u00a0of\u00a0values\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0society\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0importance\u00a0of\u00a0understanding\u00a0history\u00a0and\u00a0culture\u00a0in\u00a0order\u00a0to\u00a0create\u00a0a\u00a0future\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0solid,\u00a0not\u00a0illusionary.<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span
