Students response to Emanuel’s dismissal from the University of Illinois <\/strong><\/p>\n

(April 20, 2004)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at University of Illinois formed a committee to determine Emanuel’s\u00a0third year review as assistant professor in December, 2003. Although none of the member of the committee ever met with Emanuel, they \u00a0delivered a\u00a0final judgement in April of 2004 that he\u00a0was not qualified to\u00a0have his\u00a0contract\u00a0renewed.<\/p>\n

Although none of his\u00a0fellow faculty members spoke to him\u00a0about this\u00a0decision, or expressed any opinion at all, the\u00a0graduate students of\u00a0the department drafted and signed a letter that appealed\u00a0this process and presented the letter\u00a0to the department head, Professor Jerry Packard.<\/p>\n

The tenure review committee had never met with Emanuel, or done anything but request documents via email\u00a0during the\u00a0review. At the time, Emanuel\u00a0had three articles in major journals and had written\u00a0three chapters for the Columbia History of Chinese Literature. None of that work was considered\u00a0relevant.<\/p>\n

Following that dismissal, Emanuel was\u00a0unemployed for almost three months.<\/p>\n

Only at the end of February, 2005, was the Embassy of the Republic of Korea so kind as\u00a0to\u00a0offer him\u00a0a job working at\u00a0its\u00a0culture center in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n

Emanuel\u00a0was deeply touched that the students made such an effort on his\u00a0behalf. \u00a0 He realized that only young people are seriously interested in confronting the institutional corruption that is destroying our society. He believes that young people are our only hope.<\/p>\n
