Due to technological, cultural, social and political changes, money’s nature and its representations are shifting dramatically. Nevertheless, shifts in the nature of money, involving aesthetic, literary and technological elements, are not new. Professor Marc Shell, MacArthur Fellow and Irving Babbitt Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University, has written extensively on the cultural and literary context of money, providing deep insights into the unexpected parallels between cultural and economic developments from the stone age to the digital age. He asks as a professor of literature: What is money and where does its value come from?

Date: Friday, April 27, 2012

Time: 6:30-7:30

Place:

The Asia Institute

GCS International Building

Moderator:

Emanuel Pastreich
Director
The Asia Institute

(Professor, Humanitas College, Kyung Hee University)

MARC SHELL, a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow, is the Irving Babbitt Professor of Comparative Literature and Professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University.
